This FREE event is the first installment in Clairemont Act One's Word of Mouth staged reading series. The evening is comprised of two one act plays, "Star Maps" and "Pray for Surf." These provocative plays offer a surreal, insightful, and darkly humorous look at America’s fascination with celebrity culture. Attendess will have the opportunity to speak with the playwright after the performance.
SYNOPSES
Star Maps
Based on a series of actual incidents in which a man who lived in the Mojave with his mother stalked former Olympic ice skater around the world, this play incorporates pieces of trial testimony and other texts as it explores the fan/celebrity relationship. It's narrated by a star maps salesman, who longs for the old days when his ancestors sold maps of the heavens.
Pray For Surf
Featuring a parade of 21st Century wanderers looking for love, this play includes two derelicts obsessed with celebrity gossip; a homeless, middle-class family living at a scenic overlook, waiting for a phone call from a polling organization; a talking Lourdes-like Joshua tree who demands the return of Fernando Valenzuela's arm, and a surfer who saves the world.
